Interesting problem - everytime I logon to a user on my Windows XP
system, even Administrator, even in SAFE mode, I am automatically
logged-off.

Any advise please?
Thanks.

If you are getting a message that the computer is about to shut down then:

Click Start, then click Run, and then type
shtudown -a

That should abort the shutdown.

The sasser worm can cause repeated near immediate shutdown or reboots.

If that doesn't work for you then maybe it's serious operating system damage
instead of or in combination with a infection. If so, IMHO it would first be
better to temporarily put the HDD into another NTFS tupe of a computer, as a
slave drive, so that antivirus can be run against it; then you could put it
back and try booting the XP CD so that a repair attempt could be made upon
the operating system if that didn't do the trick. A repair shop could do
that for you.

Hi WinGuy - thanks for the advice. I don't believe it's Sasser since
the OS doesn't reboot - the user is logged-off immediately following
logon - almost as part of the logon process. I will probably reinstall
XP at this point.

Hello Rick
Before you do that, try booting the CD amd choose to repair via the Recovery
Console. Once in the RC, try giving the "chkdsk /R" command. That will scan
the HDD for errors and try to correct some other errors, and it will also
check the entire disk for sectors that might have gone bad. Anyhow, it could
be sasser or a variant because once logged in things run under the
privileges of the user even though the desktop is not yet being displayed. I
guess you'll find out, because even a reinstall (that doesn't involve a
reformat of the HDD) can leave sasser and some other virus still active and
you'll still have the same problem. :( Do reconsider putting the HDD as a
slave drive into another NTFS type computer and running virus check against
it. The NTFS XP system is really very robust, it's amazing how long it will
still keep working (up to a point) even when terribly infected or otherwise
compromised or damaged. I see it every single day, that's what I do for a
living. Good luck, Rick.

Very good advice WinGuy. My other son's laptop had a recurring BSOD
that I corrected by running chkdsk /R. Eventually I had to replace the
HDD, but at least chkdsk allowed it to run for awhile.

Thanks again.

Winguy and Rick

I have same problem. Never successfully LOGON under any or 3 Accounts on XP Home either regular or safe mode. Sometimes I do get past the welcome screen to the Wallpaper screen but no further. Never see the desktop. I will take the drive out and slave it and run a virus check against it IF I REALLY HAVE TO.

Isn't there some way I could boot off a floppy or a bottable CD of some sort and run a virus check aginst the NTFS C drive to see if it is sasser or something else?

I thought I would never have to monkey with slaving drives again, but anything is better than this frustrating 3 day attempt to get my system back without losing my data.
