Unable to work with files on a USB external drive.

A friend was unable to play his large collection of MP3 files stored on an
external USB hard drive after moving it to a new PC

When attached to my PC, I was able to access and play the files after I
enabled sharing for the folder.

I was then also able to give the user "everyone" full rights to the
directory and all files.

I should add that it appears this was once a OS boot drive

When moved to another computer as a test, the original problems returned .
I am now told "you do not have permission to view or edit the current
permission settings for (files xxxxx) but you can take ownership or change
auditing setting"

When I look at security setting for "everyone" I see full control is
checked , along with modify and write. This is true for user system and user
users , as well as the administrator (which I am)

User "creator owner" has all blank privileges , however, and there is an
odd user name, consisting of a long string of numbers "s-1-5-21-1606 " etc
(it goes on for some 20 or more characters.

Can someone tell me what is going on, and how to set privileges such that
when I return it to my friend, it will work ?

I have no idea what is going on - but you can just take ownership of the
files...
