Hi,

We are rolling out windows xp in a corporate environment, and I would like to give the users the ability to manage the power management features on their laptops. I can provide access to the control panel applet, but whenever they make a change and hit OK or Apply, a dialogue box is shown saying "Access denied".

I have also tried making these users a member of the Power Users group on the laptop, but that hasnt made any difference.

Does anyone know how I can grant these users this right (without giving them Local Administrtor rights)?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Give members of the Users group full control permission of the
following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls Folder\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies

For information on how to assign permissions to a registry key
see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Worked just fine, almost :-)
I had to set the permissions one level higher.
Dell Quickset has it one keys, they must be set to..

Thanks for the update. As it was, since I have absolutely zero
knowledge of proprietary power management features on laptops,
and did not know what laptop to research, I almost did not reply
to your newsgroup post. With your update I am now more educated
in regards to this subject and the Dell Quickset. Thus, I will
be better equipped to answer similar questions!

BTW, if you ever have any time to spare I (and the Usenet
community), would appreciate it if you would elaborate on your
statement: "Dell Quickset has it one keys, they must be set to.."

Sorry about don't saying it all. But i don't now it all yet....
Dell Quickset is a utillity that alows users to quickly change power schemas
through the systray.
From what i have found at this point - and i have stop here - the
permissions needed to fully run Dell Quickset is = Power User on machine.
I have tried to give av domain user all the permissions i the registry where
i found Quickset(seach and you wil find :-) ). This does not help. Then i
tried to give users(and domain users) NTFS rights on the programfile
katalog/dell, but still without any luck...
At this time i have given up quickset and users(domain users) have to go to
control panel and powerconfig...

I i find out someting more ill post it...

OK. Thanks. Some ideas.

- Configure Microsoft Windows XP so that the Power Icon is
displayed in the notification area of the taskbar. Then your
members of the Users group will be able to left-click the systray
power icon to quickly select a different Power Scheme, and
right-click to Adjust Power Properties. To add the icon: In
Control Panel click Performance and Maintenance if you use
Category View; else click Power Options. Click the Advanced tab.
Select the Always show icon on the taskbar check box.

- Use the Sysinternals tools Filemon (which monitors and displays
file system activity on a system in real-time) and Regmon (which
monitors and displays registry activity on a system in real-time)
to try and discover where access is being denied. Then relax
permissions. For more information about Regmon and Filemon
