I run a network with about 500 computers.. a mix of win2k & winxp
machines. I've noticed this problem in the last 2 months or so that is
annoying the crap out of me and I just can't figure out what is causing
it.
It seems to happen only on XP machines, but here are the details.
One day the user can log on just fine. The next day they go to log
on, and their background is the default and all their custom settings
are gone. When they open Word or Excel, it does the first run
initializing thing.
When they click on Start, the entire left side of the start menu is
blank.
The users have roaming profiles. What seems to happen is on the login,
the profile is reset to default. The size of their ntuser.dat file
goes from 3 meg or so, down to exactly 256k every time.
The only way I can fix it is to have them log off, and restore their
ntuser.dat from a shadow copy on the server from a day or two before.
This fixes it, but the problem returns. There is no set time period.
Some times days, some times the next day. Somtimes never (so far).
I can't find any pattern. New machines, old machines, random people.
Some people more than others. Random days not every day. It is
always a Windows XP machine, never a Windows 2000.
All machines have the same software installed. Symantec AV
10.0.2.2000, Acrobat Reader 7, Office 2003, Firefox 1.5.
