Hello,

I have a question about user profiles that I need some help with.

In our environment, we generally make a standard desktop configuration (i.e.
same icons, settings, etc.). However, as a user gets this PC and continues
to use it, they're going to customize it to their own liking. Now, let's
assume that the person leaves the company and I want to transition this PC
to the new user. I can easily change the PC name and all that stuff, but
how could I get back that vanilla desktop that the previous user started
with?

Are there any utilities out there that will let you select a specific
desktop and make that the default for all new users. I don't want to go to
a "mandatory profile" as I think these don't allow for customizability.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dave

A new user will get what is in the default profile. Set up a new user as a
test on one of your desktops and see what you get. Except for resolution
settings, the only way the new user will pickup the previous users
customizations is if you copy the old users profile to the new user or to
the default user profile.
The best way to get a standard desktop is to create an image of the desktop
setup the way you want it and then just pop it onto the pc when you want to
give it to a new user or if you need to rebuild the system for whatever
reason.

If you already have a user setup with the settings you want you can copy
its profile to the Documents and Settings\Default User folder, then all
new users will get the same settings when they are created and login. If
you don't already have a user setup how you want create one, login as
that user and set things up how you want.

To copy a user profile...

Notes:
You must be logged in with administrator rights.
You must have in My Computer, Tools, Folder Optons, Views set to show
Hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
You cannot copy from or to a user profile that is the currently logged
in user.
You cannot copy from or to a user profile that has never logged in before.

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, Advanced tab, under User
Profiles click Settings button, select the user profile you want to copy
from, click Copy to button, Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User]
(in your case Default User) folder, and Copy.
