I just got a new computer with XP. I'm using XP for the first time. Someone
else set it up for me and now their name is the main user and it says it
cannot be changed. is there a way to change it so the default is my correct
name?

Start -> Run -> Regedit -> OK -> go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

-> change the value for RegisteredOwner.

I got to "currentversion" but i don't see where to "change the value for
RegisteredOwner." Any ideas?

I found it, but I changed it and when I go to explore all users-->local disc
C:-->Documents and settings it still has the old name. Any way to change
this?

You cannot change the name of a user folder (but you can change the user
account name via Control Panel -> User Accounts -> [account name] -> Change
my name). As a workaround, you can create a new user account with
administrator privileges, and copy your data (Desktop, My Documents,
Favorites, etc.) to it. Then log off, log into the new account, and delete
the old account from Control Panel.
In my humble opinion, it's not worth the trouble just to get a new user
folder name.

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to purchase and use the full version of
WinXP (in whatever language you want) to perform a clean installation.

Hi,

You can change the computer name under System Info and your user name on the
Welcome Screen and for registered owner, but not under Documents and
Settings. You would need to create another profile for that (in your case,
copy the profile). Info below:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In the right pane, double click RegisteredOwner and change the Value data.

Or you can use this automated script:

Be sure you are looking in Windows NT (with a space in it) and not
WindowsNT (without). Highlight its Current version and in the right
pane double click on Registered Owner - an Edit box will open to type in
the correct data

You say it isnt possible to change a user name except document and settings
names. Another post I read suggested to find all names of that user in
Regedit using search and replace them with one you want to change to. Is it
possible that way?
It would be a tedious task but I inherited my ex-step-fathers computer and
we never got along so im willing o try anything.
Can i create a new user and just drag everything into my new account?

In your case, what you want to do is create a new user account for
yourself, copy over whatever data you want, and then delete the old
account. You will need to log into the new account once before you can
copy anything to it.

Thank you Malke, I'll definitely do that.

Just out of curiosity... I still wonder if the 'documents and settings' user
name can be changed in regedit by manually replacing the old names? I ask
because It was suggested by a random poster with no credentials

Hello brand,

Yes, you can, provided that you make admin account.

Thank you for that GALAracunala,
Ive gained some experience with regedit by ressetting permissions damaged by
a virus so I might try it for another user.

this is what I wanted to change.
Ive already created a NEW admin account and when switching users in the
owners account with taskman I noticed all users have the same 'user -
HFUQ108...' signatures. In my account, identities sport a name which makes it
easier to identify accounts. There are three accounts, all administrators and
the owners accounts name is 'user'. Is there a way to display names in
taskman from all accounts? I thought if I changed the 'owners' name from
'user' to 'insert name' in regedit it might work?
