Beth

I just installed the new security updates. I rebooted and
my user identity is "disconnected". During bootup it said
something was wrong with a file or it was missing (I wish
I could remember the whole error message). I cannot
access my email addresses, favorites, etc. I have been
able to find the files on my disk but how do I reconnect
to them? Help and thanks.

Dear <poster>,

In Windows XP your "identity" is kept in a folder under C:\Documents and
Settings. You are correct that something <like a file> in this folder has
gotten corrupted, causing your old profile to become corrupted and
unusable.

If you've created a new identity already it also has a folder under the
Documents and Settings folder. Here's an example of how you can recover
most of what you need:

If your old identity is, for example, "Mike", and your new identity is
"Michael", you could copy the Favorites, My Documents and other "stuff"
from the old "Mike" profile folder to the new "Michael" folder.

NOTE: go slow - don't copy everything. Remember that something <unknown> in
that folder is corrupt. You want to start with your Favorites, My
Documents, Desktop and any necessary Start Menu shortcuts.

Email files: the default location for Outlook Express email files is:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\GUID\Microsoft\Outlook Express

* where GUID is a long number, such as:
{DF7181AC-2326-404D-BD8E-7C145CB47186}
