<User> Documents link in "My Computer" goes to wrong location

Recently, not sure when, this problem cropped up. If I open "My Computer" (or
Explorer and goto "My Computer") and click on my user account "Documents"
(for the sake of this thread the user name will be Craters to help describe
this), i.e., I click on "Crater's Documents" in "My Computer", instead of
going to the folder that contains my documents, it goes to "NetworkService"
documents. If I go directly to "My Documents" from the "Start" menu or select
in the left pane "Other Places", the proper folder is opened. Can any help
with this??
Also, when I open "My Documents" there used to be a faded icon shown in the
bottom right of the window that is no longer there. I already understand the
icon is assigned by the settings in the desktop.ini within the folder, and
have made sure that the proper information is there. At first it wasn't, but
I did put it in and that did not help.

Thank You.

Craters,

For the 1st problem:

Type this command in Start/Run:

regsvr32 /n /i:U Shell32.dll

If that does not help, open Registry Editor and goto:

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]

What does the "Crater" value read, in the right pane?

Yes that helped, the first part that is, didn't have to go the registry.
Question though, what did that do? You can answer in techno terms, I'll
understand ;)

Darn it, that's the key I was looking for but couldn't find when I was
trying to figure it out on my own. Just so ya know, now it shows the proper
path; D:\Documents and Settings\[Crater]\My Documents. Substitute "[Crater]"
for my real user name.

I also did some further digging into my other little problem, which has been
going on for a while (not sure when it began). To re-iterate, the faded icon
that should be shown in the "My Documents" folder is not being shown. I
looked in the desktop.ini file again, and for some reason the proper
information is no longer there. This is a problem with all the users (there's
only two, my wife and I, mine is the admin. Well, not the "Administrator"
account, my account has administrator rights, my wife's does not. I'm running
XP Pro not Home, btw), but not the "Shared Documents" folder. The icon, or
picture, shows up fine there. At one point I had found the correct
information that the desktop.ini files should contain, but for some reason
can no longer find it. It didn't help anyway.

Thank You.... again.

The command fixes the DocFolderPaths value for your profile automatically + does more.... Windows XP runs this command when initializing a new user profile.

For the 2nd problem, post a screenshot and the contents of the Desktop.ini for the _subject_ user profile's My documents.

Took the screenshot, just not sure how to post it here. What it shows is this:

[DeleteOnCopy]
Owner=<user>
Personalized=5
PersonalizedName=My Documents

That's it. Again, substitute <user> for the user name. I know there's
supposed to be some other information there, can't recall what it is though,
and that this missing information is probably the problem.

I got another "little" problem as well, after running the command in your
first message, I re-booted (just to be sure), which reminded me of this one;
whenever I re-boot and log on, all the start-up programs run just fine, but
the icons do not show up in the task bar. I have to log off, and log back on
then its fine. It doesn't matter how long I wait after the re-boot (noticed a
long time ago this would happen if I logged on as soon as the log on screen
came up, but if I waited a few seconds or until the HD light stopped flashing
while programs were being loaded, then it was fine).

Once more... Thank you for all your assistance.

fyi, I won't be checking for your reply until tomorrow (or later today).
It's just getting way too late for me.

I don't understand what the faded item means?

Okay, I was just accessing the newsgroup from the microsoft website, where I
couldn't figure out how to attach the image (although it was probably right
in front of me, I was very tired). Now, I set up Outlook Express to access
this newsgroup, I don't use OE for anything and forgot that it can be used
to read newsgroups, for e-mail I use Outlook. Which makes me wonder why
Outlook (any version besides Express) can't do the same, but then again in
the same thought... It's probably for security reasons.
Anyway, here it is... I blocked out the owner name for my own piece of mind,
since this is a public forum.

Ah HA!!! I also found the website that has the information that used to be
in the desktop.ini
http://computers.douglasthrift.net/winxpfaq/
Oh nevermind, it shows what is in there. Okay, now I've just confused myself
(I need some more coffee). I might be thinking of another "little" problem
with the "Shared Music" folder, it also did not show the icon/image in the
folder, but now it is, correction; it showed the wrong icon/image, but is
now correct. Even though the problem with that folder is still there.
The problem with that folder is that instead of showing "Shared Music", is
is displayed as "My Music" and the folder icon does not have the music note
on it.
