Thanks guys

You could have typed: delete user account into the Search box in Help and
Support.

To delete a user account
1. Open Computer Management.
2. In the console tree, click Users.
Where?

Computer Management\System Tools\Local Users and Groups\Users

3. Right-click the user account you want to delete, and then click Delete.

Notes
• To open Computer Management, click Start, point to Settings, and then
click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then
double-click Computer Management.
• When you need to remove user accounts, it is a good idea to disable the
accounts first. When you are certain that disabling the account has not
caused a problem, you can safely delete it.
A deleted user account cannot be recovered.
• The built-in Administrator and Guest accounts cannot be deleted.

Disable a user account
Start | Run | Type: lusrmgr.msc | OK |
Click on the Users folder | Double click the user account
you want to disable | Check :Account is disabled |
Click Apply | Click OK | Rinse | Repeat

[[A disabled account still exists, but the user is not permitted to log on.
It appears in the details
pane, but the icon has an X in it.]]

Carl,

My mistake, XP Home has Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) but, as you
found out, you need to use User Accounts from the Control Panel. Which
works for both Home and Pro. I am using Pro, been a long time since I used
Home. ;-(

With Windows XP Home Edition.

You can delete a user account from User Accounts in the Control panel.

Control Panel | User Accounts

1. Click Change an account in the Pick a task list box.
2. Click the account that you want to change.
3. Select the item that you would like to change:
Click Delete the account to delete the user account from the computer. When
you delete the account, you are given the option to save the user's files on
the computer.

Note: You can not delete the account for a user that is currently logged on
to the computer.

You also cannot delete your own account, you have to log on as another
administer to delete your own account. Kind of a nice feature if you think
about it.

More info here...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783/en-us

This item comes with XP Home:
lusrmgr.msc = Local Users and Groups

But...
If you try to access Local Users and Groups (Local) with XP Home, you will
get...

[[This computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. This snapin may not be

Hi Carl,

It depends on the programs and on how they were installed. If a program was
installed just for account A and is not available to all users, then there
might be a problem.

I am the only user on my machine and I install all software, that has the
option, for everyone. So my Start Menu\Programs contains six program
shortcuts and my All Users\Start Menu\Programs contains 21 program
shortcuts, if you see what I mean.

I honestly do not know what will happen to the stuff in Documents and
Settings\All Users when the old account is deleted. I have no first hand
experience.

See this, Rick Rogers did a pretty good job explaining things here...
Installing and running software in Windows XP
http://www.rickrogers.org/xpsware.htm

[[This page is an attempt to explain how software should be installed and
