After I boot up my HP Laptop, the blue Win XP Welcome
screen comes up. In the past, the user accounts would
appear. Now this only comes up with the blue screen.
There is nothing to select and I can not go any further.
The mouse is still "alive" but there is nothing to click
on. I have tried ALT-TAB to see if there is another
window open, but this does not do anything. I have tried
starting in SAFE MODE, starting using last known good
config, but no luck. I have run diagnostics and the
hardware passes. Does anyone have ideas on what else I
might try?

I have the same problem, haven't figured it out yet. If I
do I will email you... can you do the same?

TweakUI from the XP powertoys can be used to control what
accounts are and are not displayed on the Welcome screen.
You can force XP to show an account on the Welcome Screen
by editing registry at

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Add the account to the list and set it's registry entry to a value
of 1 to force display or to value 0 to force it to not display.
While you are there you may notice some items in the list
with high values other than 0 or 1. These entries control
non-display of similarly named accounts which begin with
the string used to name the registry entry.

Is there anyway that I can get past this initial welcome
screen and get to the point where I can modify the
registry? I am currently not able to get beyond the Blue
Windows XP Welcome screen.

Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Delete. It'll bring you to a Login prompt.
Enter your username and pwd and it will log you in.

Ever have any luck on getting this resolved? I have the same problem an
can not find a fix
