I installed Windows XP Home edition for a friend and
created 4 user accounts, two for the kids and two for the
parents, giving the kids limited accounts. I thought
separate profiles were created but one of the kids is
prompted in their profile when new messages come through
AOL for one of the parents. How do I truly separate out
these profiles in Home Edition or is that possible?

AOL is a separate application and its "Parental Controls" are not part of
XP. The user needs to check and adjust their Parental Control settings in
AOL.

No, not parental controls. Just having access to say an
Outlook Express account from profile to profile. Or in
this case having access to AOL from profile to profile.

If AOL is running in the background, or the kids screen name is a sub
account of the main AOL account, then this is an AOL setting. As it
installs out of the box, there is no access to Outlook Express accounts
between different user profiles. Yes, you can access the same mail servers
from multiple user accounts, but the actual mail stores are separate.
