Hi there,

For File sharing I have had to setup an extra account for the machine
wanting to access the files on a Vista Ultimate desktop and Vista Home Basic
laptop.

Now I have on the install start up screen two users how can I set the start
up screen only to display the user of each machine but still have files
sharing?

Hope this makes sense, Tim.

you want to log in to the desktop?

Press the round start button and in the search type

control userpasswords2

and press enter

then uncheck the setting that says users must enter a password to log on

it will give you a window. Type the username and password of the user you
want to auto logon.
If you have no password leave the password boxes empty

tell me if this helps

Hi there,

I think I may have worded this wrong, what I don't want on either machine is
on boot up at the welcome screen to have 2 users, when one is only there in
order that I can share files from the one machine to the other.

I just want on the welcome screen to have a single user.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for your input but not sure if that is the solution?

Tim.

well go to the control panel> user accounts
and delete the user you do not want

is that what you want?

There is also a way to just hide a user from the welcome screen.. but why
would you want to do that?

Hi there,

Your first set of instructions worked in that they cleared the 2 user names
at the welcome screen but on each computer there is only one user.

We have had to add another user with the same name as the other computer
that wants to share files hence we have 2 users at start up. But the second
user is just there to allow the other computer to share files so we don't
want it appearing at the welcome screen.

Finally we want at the welcome screen a password to protect unauthorized
logons?

Does that explain it more clearly?

you dont need 2 users on one computer to share files...

you can share files with one user...

Nor do you need to have the same user names in order to share files if you
use the simple file sharing option.

Hi there,

How do you enable simple file sharing we've tried read many articles but not
managed it.

We have managed it by the method we've been using above but it is a pain.

Is there an easier way?

Many thanks for all your help, Tim.

Just posted this in networking again thanks for your help it made me aware
of a few other things, sorry if I didn't manage to explain myself correctly.

Hi there,

How do I enable simple file sharing thus far it has not proved simple.

We have 2 computer desktop Vista Ultimate and laptop Vista Home Basic we
want to share a folder and all its contents which is in the Documents
folder.

Both computers have just one user who logs in with a password and we are
using a Belkin N1 router.

The only way we have got this to work is by adding another user to each
computer so the laptop user is added to the desktop and the desktop user is
added to the laptop then we can share the folder and its contents.

Problem here is at the welcome screen we have 2 users to login to we don't
want that and each time when we first boot up the computer to share we have
to enter the user name and password on order to share the folder and its
files.

Surely there must be a simpler way than this.

If we delete laptop user that was added to the desktop and the desktop user
that was added to the laptop then we get the following message when we try
to access the folder \\Office\ is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource.

What do we have to do?
