I have been using XP for a while on my Dell laptop, but hadn't set up any user accounts as I was the only one using the machine. I set up a user account last night for my niece to use it as well and all of my settings have disappeared. I can't find any of the documents I have created, the desktop looked different, my internet connection has gone as well, as has my iTunes. I can't believe they've been deleted - I'm guessing the pc is just not 'seeing' them anywhere. I've tried to delete the user account but it won't let me. Can anyone help me get all my settings back please??

Megan,

You are right, your files and settings are probably not deleted. For
one reason or another you are now logging in using a different profile
than before.

If the account you are using now is in the administrator group, with
Windows Explorer to \documents and settings\ and look through the
various accounts there and see if you can spot the one you used
before, or you can always log in as administrator (might have to hit
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to bring up the classic logon screen) and then do
it.

Once you sort out what profile (user account) has all your
settings/data you can copy it to another one by right-clicking My
Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> User profiles but be careful -
if you do it the wrong way, you _will_ overwrite your old info and
that will not be recoverable.
