Yesterday, I log into my computer using the admin user account under my name
the same way I've done for at least a year and I'm surprised to find that it
doesn't even look like my PC any more.

Somehow, my personalized settings are gone. Even the wall paper is
different and the home page has been reset to the manufacturers page from
three years ago.

I had done no fiddling with the accounts in any way. The only change was I
plugged in a new USB mouse before turning the PC on.

What can I do to get my settings, my folders, my passwords, my accounts, my
favorites and all that back?

Thanks.

Your first step should be to have a look at what profile
folders are on your PC. Use "My Computer" to check the
folder names in "c:\Documents and Settings".

Also: What is your current logon name? Click Start / Run /
cmd {OK}, then type this:
echo User=%UserName%

System Restore.

Thank you.

The folders have my name on them and the Echo User returns my name has well.
So it seems to have the correct user. I also noticed that now after I
installed the optional window patches, it is no longer asking me to click on
a user ID upon log in. It takes me straight to the desktop now.

I assume you have solved your problem. If not then please
answer every question I asked in my first reply.

No, the problem isn't solved yet.

The folders in Documents/Settings are:

All Users
'My Name'
Help Assistant
Owner
Temp

and the Echo User returns my name.

So, as I said, my folders and files seem to be intact, but all my settings
in various programs are gone including bookmarks, settings, menu choices etc.

Thanks.

Presumably you previously logged on as "Owner". If so
then logging on as "Owner" once more will restore your
settings.

You could also use the Restore function to return the
machine to a previous point in time, provided that it is
not too far in the past.
