Many folks today have many more serious problems than I
do, what with the worm and all, but I have a problem. I
have XP Pro running on a new notebook computer, with a
wireless router/firewall. I set up 3 user accounts
(Guest, Administrator, Bob). Somehow, on a day when
family members installed some software and copied a music
CD to the HD, a new account appeared: Bob_2. It's not on
the login screen but Task Manager lists the account and
there is a set of folders under Documents and Settings
with the name, Bob_2. When I am logged on as Bob (from
the login screen) and I save files in My Documents, they
are put under Bob_2. In fact, I cannot access the Bob
folder because of Bob's limited access rights (I can get
at them when logged on as Administrator). The other odd
thing I've noticed is that the My music folder is now
under the My pictures folder, rather than being at the
same level. Has anything like this happenned to anyone
else? I suppose I can fix things by renaming folders,
etc., but I'd like to understand what happenned, as
something seems to have gone wrong. Thanks.

Log in as Administrator and copy all the files you want to your own
profile. You may need to take ownership of them (right-click, then
left-click on Properties, then Security and change the owner). Then
delete the bogus profile. Someone must have made it, I suppose. What
went wrong was that you let other people mess with your computer.

Thanks, Malke. These are trusted family members; I really
don't think it was them. When I went to My
Computer...Manage...Users, I could see that the name and
full name of some users had some overlap (the name on one
was the full name on another). Maybe this confused Windows
and it created this new user, Bob_2. Anyway, thanks for
responding and suggesting a fix.
