User Access Restrictions

Hi,

We have several files that share info with each other via
a network. Currently they are all stored on one
computer. Some of the files all user's use some are
input files that I would only certain people to be able
to edit, yet everyone be able to open the files
(workbooks) in 'read only' mode.

What is the best way to do that?
 
do it through the operating system
Right click on file / properties / security /
permissions / you can add users as read or change
That's NT, 2000 and xp are similar.
