I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro installed. I am
considering the installation of the Tweak Manager (ver 2.1). Any comments,
both negative and positive, about the use of this program would be very much
appreciated. Sam

Hi Sam,

Have never used it. It could save you time, depending on how much tweaking
you do. Again, I have never seen the program to know what if offers. If it
helps: You can look up the specific edits you want to perform via the same
site.

Some may have already been created here:

If you are needing any more help, post back and good luck!

I have not seen that one, but some of the similar programs out there are
mixtures of the good and the dangerous, and I generally think they are
best avoided. Especially if they start offering things like
'optimisation of RAM' which does not do any good and may do active harm

I do suggest TweakUI - by a Microsoft staff member though not officially
supported. One of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

TO Kelly and Alex, many thanks for your reply. The primary reason for
looking at the WinGuide Tweak Manager, was it ability to increase the size
of the icon cache size. I remembered how to do this with windows 98, but
was not sure for windows XP Pro, for what I have on my Dell Dimension 8200
computer. Kelly, I think I find what I needed at your web site (I keep
forgetting what an outstanding resource it is) and found an entry #121 for
Increase Icon Cache. Alex, I do have TweakUI installed but could not find
anything about increasing the Icon Cache size (I could have easily missed
it!!). The reason for wanting to change the Icon Cache size was that when
opening a large folder such as MY Computer and then closing it, the video
screen will flicker and the icons on the desktop will redraw. I upgraded my
NVIDIA video driver to ver 53.03 and it helped some, but still have the
problem.

Thanks again and I very much appreciate the excellent help you both provide
for these newsgroups, Sam.
