Hi

I now have a netgear DG834 firewall router and am unsure if I should use
static or automatic IP addreesses on my 4 machines. It would also help my
understanding if I could find an article on the pros and cons of either.

Regards
Mick

Automatic (also called "dynamic" or "DHCP") IP addresses are the best
choice for most people. They require no manual setup in the router or
on the computers. The router automatically configures each computer's
TCP/IP settings.

If a computer on your network hosts a server (e.g. web site, game
server) that is to be accessible by other people on the Internet, that
computer needs a static IP address so that you can configure the
router to pass incoming connection requests to the computer. With a
static IP address, you need to manually set up other TCP/IP settings:
subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers.
