USB's conflicts - Windows needs to do something about this!

I came to Newsgroups in the hopes of finding an answer to usb problems and
Win XP but I see the problem is everywhere. My new Dell computer has since
had 2 new mother boards, 3 wireless mice/keyboard packages, etc., replaced
and yet the mouse and keyboard are still eratic, pour if any response, unless
I unplug EVERY other usb device I have. Then it works fine. From the
beginning Dell said it was Windows, I said it was this new computer. They
have exhausted themselves and I'm almost there myself, and thoroughly
frustrated. I'm having to agree with them now. I shouldn't have to unplug all
other usb devices in order to use one! What's up with Windows? I can't
believe the amount of posts out there in this regard. I've tried non-powered
(usb only) external drives, powered external drives that it says it's
recognized but it's no where to be found in my computer. The printer just
kicks out for the heck of it and I have to reboot. Mouse doesn't work when
other usb devices are plugged in. This has more than frustrated me for a long
long time and after the Dell tech left the other day shaking his head after
putting in yet another mother board, I'm finding that this is ongoing and I
think MS needs to do something about it. All the other posts do not have an
answer, other devices are always being blamed, I don't believe this is the
case and would like an answer myself for a fix of this. 9 usb ports and I can
only use 1 at a time :(

Tracy,

There is nothing wrong with Windows (wait...did I just say that?!?)...it is
definitely a hardware issue. I have a USB mouse, USB keyboard, game pad,
UPS, webcam, palm pilot, printer, scanner, flashdrive, and memory card reader
pluged into my USB ports. I have absolutely no isses with my mouse and
keyboard set (or anything else for that matter). We are both running
Windows...I have no problems, but you seem to be having difficulty. So, it's
a hardware issue.

Don't let Dell push you into believing that there is nohting wrong with your
computer and/or that it is Microsft's problem. If Dell has replaced the
motherboard and mouse several times alreadey, then maybe Dell has a big
problem with their hardware design.

At this point, I'd be looking to get my money back...this is a Dell issue
and you shouldn't have to be dealing with this.

Please reply and let us know your progress with Dell...we'll help you out.

Good Luck!

I'm not sure what MS needs to do about it since it's a Dell Computer and
thus all support is their responsibility.

I ran into a similar problem with "unknown device" errors when attempting to
connect a USB external HD and a Flash drive. I spent a lot of time with the
tech folks at Microsoft - they were helpful - but we ended up back at the
manufacturer. In this case Toshiba. They immediately knew of the issue, and
advised an upgrade of the BIOS. IT FIXED THE PROBLEM. The version of BIOS I
was running was Phoenix LTD version 1.2.0, and we upgraded to Phoenix ACPI
Flash version 1.8. I went from the hard drive manufacturer (Buffalo), to
Microsoft, then to Toshiba. I could have saved a lot of time and energy if I
had gone to Toshiba after the Buffalo folks. Check your BIOS and see if Dell
has an upgrade for it. I bet it works.
Good luck.

It is my UNDERSTANDING that USB 2.0 Ports must be "installed" (assigned a
number, I guess) by the Operating System as well as the UDP and TCP Ports.

I am STILL w-a-i-t-i-n-g on this information BEFORE I do a----- 'clean
install'. :-(

"""I will now (did a 'repair' previously) be doing a "clean install" of
SlipStreamed - W-XP-PRO-SP1

First, I will address: USB 2.0

How do I determine the number of ports available? (# of slots on
MotherBoard?) After that, I need to install: one-at-a-time or batch
install? I NEED eight (8) USABLE USB 2.0 ports:

1( DSL
2( HP Printer 1
3( HP Printer 2
4( Kodak Digital Camera
5( Keyboard?
6( Mouse?
7( Available
8( Available

[I believe that the Windows Update for "USB 2.0" is applicable to . . .
SP2 only, isn't it?]

Now: NO FIREWALL and ALL . . . UDP and TCP Ports----- open?

I WILL be installing;

AdAware
AVG7
SpyBot
SpyWareBlaster

I will NOT be installing/using;

Microsoft AntiSpyware
Microsoft Defender
Windows Firewall

I will also NOT be "upgrading" to SP2."""
