i have an hp pavilion laptop ze4400, that didnt come with a usb2.0 port. i
came with winXP home which i am using.

i recently bought a smartdisk firefly 20 usb drive. i had/have it working
on my desktop fine (which has 2.0 ports).

i plugged it into my laptop a few times & it seemed to work ok, can get to
the drive, see it in device mgr & manage|disk management.

but i wanted more speed so i bought a 2.0 card to use install of the
built-in 1.1 port.

i have installed the updated ALI driver and that all went smooth. i plug
the firefly it (most of the time it is recognized) and it will tell me it
sees a toshiba drive (which it is) and it thinks thinks are hunky-dory. but
when i go to windows explorer the drive isnt there. when i checked
mange|disk management the drive isnt there. however, the device manager
shows it fine. i have no ? marks or ! marks in the device manager.

any ideas on how i can get this darn thing to let me get to the drive with
the high-speed 2.0?

thanks.

I had troubles installing a USB2 card on top of existing on-board USB1 -
conventional wisdom from this NG was to go to Device manager, UNINSTALL
every instance of USB/USB2, re-boot, and XP then automatically finds and
re-installs the USB ports correctly - and it worked.

One thing - BE AWARE - if you have USB mouse and/or keyboard - first replace
with conventional mouse/keyboard - I forgot that - won't bore you with the
probs THAT caused! All OK now.

well, tech support @ smartdisk finally replied, there belief was the 2.0
wasnt picking up power/enuf power from the mobo. suggested buying a powered
external hub ($35) and that fixed the problem. i guess all 2.0 pcmcia cards
are not the same or the mfg can decide whether to supply power to the
cardslot.

anyway, that fixed it.
