I am trying to use a datalink cable to share/network my two computers . They
appeear to talk to each other on start up , but how do I actually share
files ( mainly pictures ) do I use a FTP or some program in XP . What format
is the address in map network drive ?

All the "USB link" cables that I know of need software to make them work
correctly. I don't believe you can simply make a USB cable to connect two
computers and have it allow networking or communications between them.

I'd check the reference manual and/or the manufacturer's web site for
assistance, then. If you have the cables and have the software then all you
need are instructions on how to start the program up and transfer files.
