Hello all. I'm new to networking. I have a USB DSL modem (Teledat 300). Is
it possible to create a wireless network with just a USB connection? While
both my computers have 10/100 ENet cards, my modem is only USB. Can I simply
use a USB to Ethernet plug? Can
some one point me to a place that would give me clear instructions on all
the hard/software I would need, and how to go about doing this? I am an
American living in Germany.
Many thanks!

Dear Glen,

I don't think I saw any wireless routers or access points
that have a USB connection to the "outer world" (the DSL
modem in your case). You can check it yourself though. I
found the best prices for my Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G
Broadband Router and Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G Network
Adapters at www.pricegrabber.com. There are
specifications available there, so you will see if there
are any with USBs. Fortunately I use Westell 2200 DSL
Modem, which has both USB and Fast Ethernet "inner world"
connections.

Neither you could hook up a USB wireless adapter into
your DSL modem directly, since both would be
USB "clients", and this would not work either. A simple
USB to Ethernet plug would not work definitely: the
protocol on the USB cable is totally different from the
Ethernet one.

A possible (but neither a simple nor an elegant) solution
in your case could be to connect one of your PC's through
USB to your DSL modem, and to connect a router/"wireless
access point" to that PC using its Fast Ethernet card.
After that you'll have a lot of fun configuring routing,
forwarding and ISP access (PPPoE or PPTP etc.) on that PC
(in the middle) and finally, I believe, this could work.
Since I haven't tried it myself, there is no guarantee.

I am Russian living in the U.S.

Serge
