I have tried several different webcams, but they all seem to have the same
problem. The hardware installs properly and the cam works. The when then I
fire-upYahoo messenger (or any other instant messenger program) then try to
activate the webcam from the program, it completly locks up Yahoo messenger
(or other messenger program). The ONLY way to kill Yahoo Messenger is to
manually reset the computer. End task does not kill it, and Shut-down or
restart both try to wait till Yahoo messenger is closed (but it won't).
I have tried all new drivers. I have gone to the help pages of Yahoo
messenger. I have even called tech support for the camera, but I had
already done everything they suggested, and they just told me to return it.
Can anyone think of a possible problem?

Do you have a firewall installed? I use Zone Labs and it must be set to
"Medium". Try MSN Messenger and see if it works with your CAM. That might help
define the problem. Being behind a router may also create issues.

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Messenger.

Please try the following fix:

1. Shut down Yahoo! Messenger if it is currently running.

2. From the Windows Start menu at the left bottom of your screen, click "Run."

3. From the input area, type regedit and press "Enter." The registry
editor application should open.

4. On the left side, expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder (or key), then expand the Software folder under it and select "Yahoo."

5. If there is a Webcam folder, go to the next step. If there is no
Webcam below the Yahoo folder, go to the Edit menu and click New, Key,
and type Webcam.

6. Select the Webcam folder.

7. From the Edit menu click on New, DWORD Value, and type UseVFW
without any spaces.

8. Double-click on the entry UseVFW and change the entry in Value data
to 1. Then click "OK."

9. Exit the Registry Editor application.

10. Restart Messenger and try starting your webcam by clicking "Start My Webcam" from the main window's Tools menu.

Note:If you are on Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to be logged in as

Dave,
I have the exact same problem and I know exactly what causes it and what the only possible fix for it is- You have done a windows update. That's the problem. When I first started Windows XP my webcam which was bought especially to work with Yahoo! Messenger worked perfectly. Then I did an update of windows xp and something in the code of the update corrupts drivers for webcam services. I know the webcam works fine if you are using the camera wizard but yahoo crashes all the time. The only answer is to restore your system to the time before your updates or reinstall the OS and never update. I have tried to contact anyone with any other ideas and nothing works, even uninstalling the updates as the code becomes permeanatly corrupted. If anyone has knowledge of this and a fix please email me. Good Luck

The only problem with that is I would be leaving myself open to many
security flaws that windows update fixes. I do not feel that this is a good
fix.
