USB vs PS2 keyboard

I have windows xp home edition on my Sony laptop. I have 2 questions:
1. When I plug in a USB keyboard, it is recognized and I use it. When I
put a PS2-to-USB adapter on a PS2 keyboard and plug it into the same port,
it is unrecognized hardware. Can I fix this problem? Is there more than 1
type of PS2-to-USB adapter, wired in a different manner?
2. I must plug my USB keyboard into the USB port after I have started my
computer. If I leave it plugged in from the previous day's shut down, it is
ignored until I unplug it, the re-plug it in. Any ideas?

Impossible to answer your question since you don't provide enough
information. Was the keyboard one designed to be used with a PS2 to USB
adapter? Do you have specific drivers for the keyboard.... since you don't
tell us which make and model it is, I cannot do your research for you.

Are your USB ports set in the Device Manager to be turned off to save
Power.... go into the Device Manager, in USB Controllers, click on each
separate entry, then look in the Power Management tab.

Thanks Cari,
I was told that since the adapter I purchased is green (mouse code color?)
and the keyboard code color is purple, I should have purchased a purple one.
No special keyboard software. All 3 built-in USB-1 ports are on all the
time. And 2 USB-2 ports on a PCMCIA card to give me better thruput to my
outboard 2 1/2" 2nd hard drive, and to my 120 gig external backup hard
drive. I have a laptop to be able to move between home, office, and
clients, not to run on batteries in airplanes. I only turn the thing on in
the air to show off pictures of my grandkids, or play a little FreeCell.
I'll try a purple one - any other ideas?
And any thoughts on why the USB keyboard must be plugged in after Windows xp
is running or it is ignored? No big deal, just slightly annoying.
