Is there a way to find out, by using Windows XP, what kind of USB format my
computer's USB ports support, i.e. version 1 or 2?

winkey+pause/break > hardware tab> scroll down to and expand USB , look
for an enhanced controller

Thank you Roberto,

The closest I can come to verifying the version is on the Details tab of the
enhanced controller's properties dialog box. There it says, if I scroll down
to "Bus Relations" in the combo box, "USB\ROOT_HUB20\4&f180e13&0"

I don't even know if this means that it is USB 2.0. Am I looking at the
right place? Can I verify it more clearly somewhere?

If you have an enhanced controller then you have USB2, see here for a
second opinion

Plug a usb 2.0 device in.

If you only have 1.1 the computer will popup a warning that the device is
function in a backward compatible mode and may not function at full speed.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who do understand binary
and those who don't.

If it shows 'enhanced' then it is 2.0.

Yes, this is an USB 2.0 controller. USB 1.x controllers
have names like "USB\ROOT_HUB\xxxxx".
