usb to serial

I am trying toset up my mobile phone to dial out on the internet but it has a
serial connector and my laptop is only usb.I have a adaptor for this but the
phone program works on ports 1-4. how can i set the usb adaptor to run asport
1-4?

I don't think you can. Anyone who writes a program that assumes that
serial ports are only in the range of 1 to 4 should be ashamed of
themselves.
 
You are suppoed to be able to set yhe correctly COMx port within the USB to
Serial adapter. If you can not then you have a limited cheap adapter.
 
Perhaps nobody writes programs for serial ports as they are in decline
these days. USB is the way forward. Most new DELL computers come
without Serial or Parallel ports!
