Usb to serial console port

Hi.
I can't connect my laptop to a router cisco using the Usb to serial (com port)cable. For is console port
In the device manager the usb port is unknown device. is there any way for me to tell win xp that this usb port is a com port

If the USB Port is shown as unknown device, then it isn't installed properly and won't work with any devices

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed and working properly before attempting to use any devices/ports otherwise you will not get any other functionality.
 
This sounds like you need to ask Cisco about using their
router with USB to serial. It seems that you have a Cisco
router with a serial connection and you want to use USB to
connect it. If this is not a plug and play router USB
doesn't know what to do with it.

You can try using the add hardware wizard to tell Windows
that you are installing a Cisco router on the USB port and
then it can find or be directed to the correct drivers. A
router would normally be connected using the Ethernet RJ-45
connection, you might need to get a PCMCIA NIC to connect
your router.
