Hello Anybody,

I have a USB to IDE enclosure that Win XP claims is ready to use. I get the
standard, detecting new device, installing new device . . , new device is
ready to use.

However, Win XP does not assign a drive letter to the drive. How do get Win
XP to automatically assign a drive letter when I plug the drive in?

FYI: I searched the data base with usb to ide. I did not find a post that
dealt with the case where the drive is never assigned. Many folks have
struggled to get consisten drive letter assignments.

Thanks!

Go to Computer Management and find Disk Management. See if your drive listed
there. Is it marked as active? If yes you will have to mark it as inactive.
You can use the diskpart command to do so.

I think I had that problem once.

perhaps other drives work. those that have been partitioned and
formatted.
should be quick to test. If this is the case then
connect the drive to IDE, then partition and format it!

how often/when do usb-ide adaptors fail to read an active partition?

it's typical to plug a drive in and read what was C. that is an active
partition. I haven't heard of anybody ever having to make it inactive.

Have you formatted the HDD in the enclosure ?
