USB-serial controller question

Trying to connect a Sony Ericsson mobile T630 to XP Home, SP2 with all MS
updates. On attaching DCU-11 cable, SP2 sees a new device (USB-serial
controller) but fails to install cable when pointed to folder containing
latest SE cable drivers. Odd thing is SP1 on same PC did install this cable
18 months ago (before SP2) and all was OK. Is there a trick I am missing to
get this cable installed? Tried allowing OS to scan internet but still no joy.

Have you checked if the device is installed still in Device Manager. If it
is, right click it and uninstall then reinstall the device pointing it at the
latest set of drivers for the device.

I've had similar problems in the past with printers and scanners where
windows loses track that it's already got the device installed and tells you
that there's new hardware.

Hope this helps.

It simply does not appear anywhere in Device Manager! Since posting I deleted
all USB entries (including the Boadband modem) in Device manager, rebooted
and all were thereby restored and the "New Hardware Found" panel (USB Serial
Controller) came back as it saw the USB mobile lead asking for drivers. Still
failed to install lead drivers from the expanded Sony Ericsson DCU-11 folder.
Any other suggestions?

I don't know how comfortable you are with the Registry Editor, but I suggest
you search the registry for keys that match whole or part of the name of the
device you're trying to install.

You can access the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run... and typing
'Regedit'.

You should make sure you make a backup of your registry, preferably to a
floppy disk or some other secure / removable media before making any changes
to your registry.

An alternative is to check the Device Manager whilst in safe mode. I'm
almost sure that in the past I've seen devices appear in the list whilst in
safe mode that haven't appeared when starting up in normal mode.

Tried searching reg for DCU-11 but no joy nor in safe mode in Devices. Truth
is I can not get SP2 to acknowledge it has a DCU-11 connected- only that it
detects new hardware and wants the driver to be installed!

Is there a software CD-ROM that came with the cable? Have you installed
everything from the CD first? I've known some devices in the past to create
virtual devices in windows. Devices that don't physically exist, but have a
driver and can provide interfaces to other peripherals. I'm wondering whether
the software on the CD installs one of these so that the USB-Serial device is
detected properly.

I'm thinking this 'cos when I've setup quite a few PCs from a formatted hard
disk, the audio device appears as multimedia audio controller, then as the
driver is installed for it, other devices suddenly appear and are installed.

Kurt I have at last concluded that then cable is faulty. I suddenly realized
that this cable has a chip (EPROM?) in it and that the chip must have failed.
SP2 should be showing DCU-11 on first recognition on the takbar. Without that
there is no prospect of it finding a driver. I have thrown the lead away and
ordered a bluetooth dongle. I expect I'll have problems there so hold your
breath!
