My scanner was working fine but now i get a message saying it cannot be
detected.i've uninstalled and reinstalled and everythings fine until i
actually want to use it - then it's not there apparently! tech support said
it must be a virus or spyware and i should reinstall my operating system but
they always say that-lazy gits! Anyone got any ideas? Please

Go to the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and uninstall everything
relating to your scanner, and the graphics program that came with it.
Shutdown your PC unplug your scanner and reboot. Shutdown again, connect
your scanner and
reboot again. If you uninstalled everything XP's "plug&play" feature will
come up with a balloon that it found new hardware and ask you if you want to
install it. Answer Yes and it will install or ask you to insert the
installation disk. There may
be different procedures someone can use but this way has worked the best for
me.

Since you already have uninstalled/reinstalled your scanner consider the
following:

When the problem occurs go to your scanned in Device Manager, right
click and select properties. If properties indicates the scanner is not
working, try the trouble shooting sequence.
In Control Panel, Scanners etc, right click on your scanner, select
properties and try a scanner test.
If you have your scanner connected to a USB hub, try connecting it to a
USB port on your computer.
Check with the scanner manufacturers web site for updated drivers.
When the problem occurs, try disconnecting and reconnecting the scanner
USB cable.

No special order to the above.
