USB reconnection fails

We have a device connected to a Win XP PC using our own device driver. When
the USB line is zapped with electrostatic discharge the communication
between our device and PC dies, and our device detects this condition and
resets itself. However, after this reset the XP PC does not detect that the
device has been reset/reconnected so the driver never loads. We can fix this
only by resetting the PC which is not a good solution. Any ideas will be
greatly appreciated...

Thanks !

Any electrical discharge associated with a piece of hardware that is
connected to your computer is a bad thing. You could be doing serious
damage to your system. Fix the problem with electrical discharges before
doing anything else. These are the sorts of problems that will void your
warranty. When you unplug the cable from the computer and then plug it back
in, what happens?

We have to test for electrostatic discharges during which we've found about
this problem. I can actually create the same problem with just pulling the
USB cable and plugging it back. Oddly, I have to repeat this 5-20 times
before the problem shows up ! Any ideas ?

While the idea behind the USB port is great in that it allows "hot
swapping", it is not intended to be done many times in rapid succession. No
wonder you are seeing this problem. Quit the rapid unplugging and plugging
of the cable and your problem is solved.
