I upgraded my Compaq Presario 7000T from Windows 98SE to
Windows XP Pro a couple of months ago. I have not been
able to use my USB ports ever since.

My USB Compaq Internet Keyboard & USB Mass Storage Device
are only recognized while in 'safe mode'. I cannot get XP
Pro to recognize them in 'regular mode'.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used to work for Compaq tech support as a co-op and the
largest thing I noticed was having the Internet Keyboard
taskbar item (as well as hidden items in msconfig) enabled
would cause major issues when switching from 98 -> XP
Pro. If this item is still enabled in your startup
(forget the exact name of the files) make sure you disable
it and try rebooting your machine and see what happens.

Make sure you're up to Service Pack 1.
If that doesn't fix it, go into Device Manager and delete
anything that has to do with USB.
When you reboot, it should all plug-n-play correctly.
If there are any devices that need additional drivers, you
should have the disks ready to hand Windows when it asks
forthem.

Can you be a little more specific? I can't find anything
in the Startup of MSCONFIG that refers to a keyboard. I
am kind of a novice and don't change things unless I
understand them.

JeffO,
I do have all the latest updates for XP Pro including
Service Pack 1. I have tried uninstalling the USB and
restartiing the computer. I had tried this several times
before. Again it did not work. All that comes up
is 'unknown device'. I have tried to find drivers, but
can't locate any. When I visit the SecureMate Website
for my Mass Storage Reader, it says XP should have the
driver already installed. When I tried to call Compact
about this, they basically blew me off saying they don't
support XP, I had to contact Microsoft. I can't find any
help on Microsoft's Website, not even a number.

If I boot up into Safe mode, I can get my pictures off of
my SD card from my camera and save them to 'My
Pictures'. Then I have to reboot the computer. This is
a work around, but a big hassle. I just want to get
things working without having to get a whole new
computer.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a conflict between Compaq
USBs and Windows XP. The drivers for the USB are dated
7/1/2001. I tried to update the drivers for the USB, but
were told there were not any updates.
