1. What would I have to buy in order to expand the number
of ports on my computor so that I don't have to unplug my
scanner in order to plug in my digital camera.

2. Would an SD card reader allow me to upload the cards
contents directly onto my computor.

These may sound really dim questions, but that's where
sister is at.

Any help appreciated - Thanks Sister

a USB hub (or several depending on how many ports you want) is the
easiest

What you are looking for is a PCI card with USB 2.0 compliant connections
(say that to a salesperson and hopefully they can show the correct product)
You may wish to have the store install it for you.

This is an example of a PCI USB card (others cards are available with 4 USB
ports per card I think.

This PCI card will give you USB 2.0 and Firewire capabilities if you think
you may need that in the future:

Sorry, I don't know but I would think that would be the case.

Example of card reader that will plug into your new USB ports:

Note: I am sure there are better brand names out there but this will get
you started.

No stupid questions - only stupid answers.

You might best get a powered USB port. This plugs into one of the existing
ports on your machine, and provides more (often 4) ports. it's best to get
a powered one as this will keep you from running up against the current
limit of the one port you're attaching to. You can also place it in a more
convenient location.

Yes, and this can be an excellent choice - they can be a little faster than
the camera and it's easier on the camera's batteries, and if the camera
shuts off automatically, you don't have to keep turning it back on.
Finally, I've seen some of the camera-USB cables wear, and the SD card
reader can be cheaper than a replacement cable.
