I have a PC with 6 USB Ports, 2 in front 4 in back, but none of them work. If
I hook up my digital camera the whole machine freezes and the camera reads
communication error. I tried Device Manager to see if it reported any errors
it tells me they're working properly, which they're not. I tried to reinstall
the driver from my motherboard CD it won't let me beacause it says WinXP SP@
comes with a better USB driver. I tryied to update driver from Device Manager
it tells me no better software can be found. Any suggestions? All ideas
welcome. Thanks

Try to do a System Restore to a time where the USBs were working. Something
similar happened to my CD-ROM drives, and System Restore solved the problem.

In addition to Sebastian"s answer, check the properties of the USB
ports and see if they are set to sleep when not in use in the Device
Manager.

Thank you Sebastian, but have been having this problem too long for System
Restore to fix, will remember in the future, though.

I believe Byte is referring to the Power Management settings.

Open Device Manager.
Scroll down to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and expand it.
Right-click on the USB port that is having problems and go to Properties.
Click the "Power Management" tab.
Check/uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power." option.
