I upgraded XP Home last night to SP2 and since then haven't been able to
access my camera and printer through their USB ports.

I got the SP2 upgrade from my computer manufacturer on a CD which they swore
had a patch for this problem, as it had previously put me off installing
SP2.

Anyone know if there is a patch for the problem please, and if so do they
have a link to it? I tried the Knowledge Base without success.

Thanks.

Let me repeat the part of your post I find interesting..
I got the SP2 upgrade from my computer manufacturer on a CD which
they swore had a patch for this problem, as it had previously put me
off installing SP2.

And then pose my question based of that...

Did you, after installing SP2 from the provided media - proceed to install
whatever "patch" your manufacturer said they had for the problem SP2 caused
on your particular brand/model of PC? I

f I am understanding you correctly, you had learned this issue might arise
BEFORE - yet talked to the system manufacturer who sent you/pointed you to
the patch which fixed the problem you heard may happen if you installed SP2.
The manufacturer is unlikely to have modified SP2 installation to include
any such patch - so surely it must be something separate on the media they
sent or on their support web pages.. Perhaps even (possibly) a BIOS upgrade
of some sort.

Thanks both for your responses.

I don't have USB version 2.0 so the only part of Carey's links that would
appear possibly to apply would be the first one, and specifically the
suggestion there to uninstall all USB entries in Device Manager and
reinstall by rebooting the machine. Before trying that I want to speak to my
computer manufacturer in the morning (I'm in the UK) - the company
concerned being Evesham.

With regard to Shenan's point, yes it is interesting and it's why I want to
speak to Evesham. I spoke to them initially about a crashing problem which
they said was recognised by MS with SP2 being the solution - I said I'd
installed it once before but given up on it because it disabled my USB
ports. They replied that was because I didn't have the USB patch for SP2 and
they'd send me a disk which included it. It doesn't appear as a separate
file. Nor does Windows Update mention it, nor any Knowledge Base entry using
"USB" as the search object. I've downloaded and installed all Express and
Custom XP upgrades.

I'm keen to know whether there is such a known problem AND patch - it may be
of course that the uninstall/reinstall routine will work, but I'm waiting to
see whether Evesham are able to say "oh yes we'll send you the patch" or
(knowing my luck, the more likely answer) "never heard of that one, don't
know who told you that"!

So, if Evesham confirm there is a patch for my problem and can send it to
me, or failing that the uninstall/reinstall routine works then all well and
good. In the meantime I'm open to any other suggestions and offer my thanks
once again for the responses to date.

Just to clarify, my USB ports ie my camera and printer were working fine
before each occasion that I have installed SP2. I've never had to reboot the
machine or use an additional power supply or anything like that, I've just
plugged the device in and it's worked as intended. Both times I installed
SP2 the devices no longer appeared recognised. The first time I did a system
restore to SP1 and the USB ports worked again. This time I hope to keep SP2
but I need those USB ports to work!

Update - Evesham interestingly took me straight through the procedure of
uninstalling every USB entry in Device Manager and rebooting the machine, as
per the article in one of Carey's links. It worked.

Thanks for the responses, always great to get prompt and helpful replies on
these newsgroups.
