USB ports no recognize memory stick

I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2 but when connect a memory stick Kingston
256 MB Windows no recognize it, say than the device couldt be recognized.

Have you tried the other USB ports, thinking of the ones directly
connected to the mainboard on the backplate.
Do any other USB devices work on your system?
Does the stick work on other systems?
Is the USB port 1.1 or 2.0? Which type is the stick?

Does it work in other computers? That is the first thing you need to answer-
your action comes from there.

If it does work then the issue is your computer and the cause can be
investigated. If it doesn't work in other computers it would seem to
indicate that you could be wasting time and effort trying to solve the
problem on your machine- it's likely to be the memory.
