My USB ports have disappeared from the lists and I need to re-install
them. Can someone help me with easy instructions? (Easy, because my
system is in Italian, so I have to translate what you say into Italian
computerese.)
I try to reach my camera and get only com1 and com6 as ports to look
for it. It was working a couple of weeks ago.

Open Device Manager > View menu > show hidden devices, delete all
references to USB controllers if any exist then reboot, USB sould be
redetected and installed once more.

They do exist, I saw them before asking. So, I delete them and they
will be reinstalled on restart, eh? Simple enough. Thanks, Roberto.

I did it. Everything is reinstalled and my camera now appears to be
two cameras and is unreachable in either ID. The mini screen that
comes up still only shows as choices COM1 and COM 6 and obviously,
camera is at neither.

Have you tried using System Restore to revert your system back to a point
when everything worked correctly? It can always be "undone" if you are not
satisfied with the results.

I have done before, although the computer has never been as I would
like it. It is not reliable, but of course if everything else fails, I
will try that.

Sorry to see you haven't resolved the USB issue yet, sometimes USB can
be bothersome.....
Doing a system restore is not the same as a reinstall [ I'am reading you
are confusing the two]

No, I am not. I did the reinstall of the ports but it didn't affect
the choices of port and I still cannot communicate with the camera.
The above suggestion would take me to the point where a photo program
would acquire photos, but not to where camera controls would work,
since from installation of the program it hasn't worked.
I watched all 7 of the USB ports and drivers install themselves after
rebooting. So that desired result is achieved. If I unplug the
camera, reboot and replug the camera, the computer dutifully jumps to
recognize it. It created a new icon -- a second one-- for it, but the
camera controller can't communicate, nor can anything communicate
except a Microsoft image program. I have four installed photo programs
and not one can acquire images from the camera, and now the scanner,
which once worked flawlessly also can't be reached.

You may need to remove "Phantom" entries from the USB and Digital
Imaging categories. This requires adding a System Environment Variable
name "DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices and settings it's value = 1.
Open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden Devices".
Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category. Locate all devices
shown in diminished tone or Grayed out. Right Click each and then take
"Uninstall". Repeat this operation for the Imaging category. This should
be done with all USB peripherals unplugged. Once completed, plug the
USB peripherals in one at time and try to always plug devices to the
same USB socket. ( Important for USB1(.1) components).

I didn't really get that in English, so how will I do it in Italian?
