I have a 3 years old DELL DIMENSION XPS-T550 and WINDOWS XP HOME
EDITION. There is no manual with the computer. On the back of the
case I see two ports labeled USB 1 USB 2. When I look at DEVICE
MANAGER in CONTROL PANEL I see USB PORT but no designation of 1 or 2.
PROPERTIES say:
INTEL(r) 82371AB/EB PCI TO USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER.

Question: How can I tell which version USB port this is ... like 1.0
or 2 .. not sure of the versions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi!
if the device which you want to install support USB;no
matter in which USB you are going to connect.

Best bet? Ask Dell if it's version 1.x or 2. It's *probably* 1.something.

If you *need* USB 2.0 support, addon cards are available. Note that sticking
a USB 1.x device (say, a USB Zip 100) on a 2.x port won't speed up the
device, any more than sticking the tires from a Corvette on a Geo Metro will
make the Metro any faster. (I know, wouldn't fit anyway...)

If it is 3 years old it is almost certainly just 1.1. Port 1 and port 2 are
both the same. Whatever you plug in will work fine, but 2.0 is much faster
for some things (like an external hard drive) but would make no difference
for others (mouse or Keyboard).

For $30 or less you can get a new board, plug it in and go. I recommend
doing so only if you are a gamer, use an external HD or a 5 megapixel
camera.

Thanks for the info, folks. Off I go to Office Depot for the card.

ps: What if I put the Corvette tires on my Nissan Pickup?

One FINAL (I hope) question.

Once I install the new USB 2.0 PCI CARD do I have to uninstall or
disable the old one?

They'll probably (most likely) be able to be active at the same time. Check
the manufacturer's website(s) for any "gotchas."
