USB key not recognized on USB hub

I have a USB iKey2032, which is used for signing PDF files with a securioty
certificate from GeoTrust.

I recently changed to a new laptop computer with Windows XP (previously I
had a laptop with Windows 2000). What now happens is that the USB key is
recognized correctly when I connect it to a USB port on the computer, but
not when I connect it through a USB hub; I get the error message that there
is no driver available for the key (the driver IS installed).

On the old computer it was recognized correctly also when connected through
the hub.

It seems to be something in XP that prevents this from working. Any hints?

Hi there Hans
my name is joseroyjavelosa a.k.a. iceflow it is not easy to troubleshoot
your problem especially regarding problems with hardware devices what i can
help you with is to assist you in your trouble shooting.
the best practice is
* first try to use the hub not ur usb ikey that you have, but the usb hub.
Try to use your usb hub in other computers and see if the problem reoccurs.
If this is the case the usb hub is defective.

*disconnect the usb ikey that you have from the hub and plug it directly to
the usb port on your laptop, which you had already tried and resulted with no
errors. This proves that the error is due to the usb hub or somehow its
connection to your laptop. Try power cycling the hub and plugging it into
different ports of your laptop. Power cycling refers to turning the device's
power off and then on in order to get the device to function again an example
is with an external modem, power cycling is the process of unplugging the AC
power adapter from the power source of the modem and plugging it back in.

Both of the solutions refers not to device driver issues.
A more advance way to determine the problem is to look up for USB-related
messages in the APPLICATION and STSTEM logs using EVENT VIEWER this is
because when windows XP detects problems with usb devices it automatically
writes error messages to the application and system logs which will provide
you with useful troubleshooting information. Another tip when resolving USB
issues is to examine all the devices under the USB controllers tree within
the Device Manager. If a yellow exclamation point is seen present before a
specific device, you must verify if the system firmware of that device is
configured to allocate an interrupt request or IRQ number to the USB
controller.

I hope my reply would help you trouble shoot your hardware problems

If the key has no USB serial then XP has to see it as new
device on the hub and wants to install the drivers again.
That's normal.

Had XP asked for drives? Then this may help:

Then attach the key, delete it in the device manager, remove
it and attach it again.

Thank you for your reply.

What do you mean by "If the key has no USB serial ..."? And if this is
normal, how can I resolve the problem? Do I really need to reinstall the
driver? If so, what happens if I connect the key to a USB port on the
computer?

XP does not ask for drives, the system just asks for a driver for the key,
when it is attached via the hub.

There is no way to delete the key in the device manager, I can only
deactivate or deinstall it.

(And I should add that the hub works perfectly with other USB devices.)

USB devices should have a hardware serial number that
is unique per device. Devices which have on are recognized
on different USB ports as the same device so drivers has
to be installed again.
USB device without a serial are assumed to be different
ones as soon as they are connected to a different USB
port or even with a different hub in beween.

driver?

Yes, but it should work without any problem.

Fine. Then there is no need to remove it from the device manager.
Have you read my page and checked it?

OK, thanks! That seems to be the answer to my problem.

But what happens when I install the driver 5 times - do I get 5 different
installations in my computer?

Maybe ask their tech support?
