USB Issues

Hi,
Sometimes my cordless mouse and cable modem just stop working for no
apparant reason. I deducted that it has to do with USB since that is what
they have in common. There is a touchpad mouse on my keyboard, so after the
cordless mouse and cable modem goes out I know that the rest of the computer
works fine. To fix this issue I usually just restart the computer, and then
it all works again, at least for a while. I don't see a pattern or a time
length, but it is really annoying to sit down and want to look something up
online and then have to restart the computer. Any ideas?

Thanks

Disable power management on the USB hub. To conserve power, Windows XP
attempts to disable USB when a device is not in use. Often, the USB device
will fail to reactivate. Follow the steps below to resolve this issue.

a) Click Start, then right-click My Computer.
b) Click Properties and click the Hardware tab.
c) Click the Device Manager button.
d) Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.
e) Right-click USB Root Hub, then click Properties.
f) Click the Power Management tab.
f) De-select the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
check box.
g) Click OK and close Device Manager.

Let us know if this helps.

In Device Manager, check the properties of the devices involved and
properties for whatever they're connected to (USB hub for mouse and
possibly cable modem as well). You will find a setting that disallows
standby status. Try the system with standby disabled for these devices to
see if that eliminates their performance problem.

Okay, I did that. I really hope that works. I will come back in a few days
and confirm if it did or not. I bet it will. Thanks a lot.
