USB flash memory

XP on a Toshiba 6100 can't find the drivers for various
brands of USB flash memory sticks. This is weird because
XP on other laptops in the office XP recognizes the
device as soon as it's plugged in. The Toshiba is one
month out of warranty, and Toshiba won't take my support
calls on this - not even if I pay (they say it's a
Microsoft problem). Any suggestions?

Thanks - but I've checked with 3 different flash memory
manufacturers (Apacer, PNY & HP), and they all insist
that it's a Microsoft issue.

Obviously this isn't a "Microsoft issue" - these devices work in all other XP machines.
This reply means that Windows on your machine is corrupted. There are 10 million of possible corruptions, flash
manufacturers don't need to know all of them. Maybe even IT administrator of your organisation disabled using usb
drives.

Well, yes, it is a "Microsoft issue" - because Microsoft
lets Toshiba butcher the OEM XP distribution, and Toshiba
doesn't distribute with a USB Mass Storage Device driver,
nor do they provide a download, and neither does
Microsoft. All I need is the driver. Not too hard to
understand, I hope.

Ok so you miss a standard XP driver on your machine.
Have you tried to install it from Windows Update?
