I have a 32 MB USB flash drive that Device Manager sees as plain as day and
says the device is working properly. When I try to access the drive from My
Computer, Copy To, Move To, the drive doesn't appear. What next?

Right-click on "My Computer", go to "Manage", then click on "Disk
Management". You should be able to assign a drive letter from there.

I did as you suggested. Here's what comes up under properties:

Media
State: Idle
Identification: Type: Removable Media (read / Write)
Sequence #: 3
Location: Media Pool: Import\Removable media
On-line library: USB 2.0 (HS) Flash Disk USB Drive
Drive: Drive 0
Enable Media: Yes

Side
State: New
Side: 1 of 1
ID Label: Type: FAT32
Statistics: This side has never been mounted
This side has never been allocated

Could my external USB hard drive, which does show up plain as day, be
causing a problem?

Solved the problem. WinXP is stealing my "J" drive, a networked laptop, and
assigning it to the flash drive. It isn't bothering to to show the correct
device name.

An "oh-so-common" problem, which, not surprisingly, still happens on my
Vista workstation at work with my external USB hard drive.

Go figure.

It's just another feature from Microsoft, the world's most user friendly
software company.
Or as the tech support idiots say when we can't find find a record in their
database, "It's there, you just can't see it."

Mine has a simlar issue: Flash drive currently identified in Windows XP as
memory_card on ‘HP0018715d357’ (Z:) It's readable but shows icon as network
drive.
Any ideas on how to correct this? I don't think it always looked like this...
