A couple of Win 2000 pc's here have given the error

"the device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping
the device again later."

when the users have tried to perform a "safe removal" of their USB 2.0
flash drives, yet the same device in another pc does not cause the
issue.

any ideas what could be causing this?

I've tried
disabling the AV
running chkdsk /f
logging off and back on again
closing various process' in Task Manager

Each one of these USB flash disks, jump drives, etc.,
is supposed to have its own unique identifier. Try
running device manager and having it ID the flash
disks as removable drives or check whether or not a
setup was required for this identification. Once seen
as a "removable" drive or storage device, then getting
a "safe removal" approval should occur. AFAIK, the "safe
removal" indicates that the cache for the removable disk
or drive has been flushed.

Something probably still has a file open on the disk. Close all browsers
including "My Computer" etc.

tried that, I think there is some corruption somewhere on the machines
in question as it only happens on certain PC's and not on others (even
with the same flash disk)

The users don't have the folders/files on the device open do they?
Even with the files folders displayed on the RHS of Explorer the
device is considered open.

No this will happen even if the flash drive is inserted then without
doing anything else with it apart from attempting to "eject" it via the
system tray applet it still comes up with the error.

OK, sometimes the simplest things get overlooked.

I seem to have "finally" resloved this issue (at least on the PC's
here!)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/235032/EN-US/

Followed the resolution directions in the link above and after a 2nd
reboot the USB FlashDisk ejects as its supposed to!!
