USB error msg

Can anyone help with the follopwing problem:

Laptop with windows xp, displays message "USB device not
recognized due to malfunction" even when there are no
devices connected.
USB devices previosly installed are Cannon i70 printer,
visioneer strobe xp scanner, and Rim blackberry. Again,
the message is displayed when no usb devices are connceted.

Then it sounds like there is a problem with the USB Controller on the
motherboard.

What does the Device Manager say about the USB Controllers?
