Is there any way to get a list of USB drivers installed on my system? I have
plugged in a new peripheral and the driver will not load properly--I suspect
there may be a residue of another driver (previous version of a similar
peripheral) that I need to "uninstall" first.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

There is no list for usb drivers.

You can go to Device Manager and then browse to the last list. You will see
that it shows all the USB controllers on your machine and the id for each
port.

If you are facing problems with the usb ports then you can right click on
each usb name and then uninstall it. Then click on Scan for hardware changes.
Windows will detect the usb ports again and then reinstall the drivers for
all the ports. You will be able to remove the residue of the previous drivers.

OK, my problem is when I plug in the peripheral, the PC finds the new
hardware and I go throughthe wizard and a "few "dll'd" are installed when I
get the error "there was a problem installing this hardware.....an error
occurred during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the
file specified". All I can do is click the "finish" button and that takes me
back to the start.

I know the driver works because I have been standing beside another guy when
he installed it on his machine.

I don't know what to do next. Maybe the driver is defective.

Hi,

That means that your setup of windows has been badly corrupted. You can
first try to see if you are able to repair the system files with this command

sfc /scannow

Then try and see if you are having problems with the device. Note that
pluggable devices may work properly in some computers and completely fail in
another system. If you are still having problems with the plugging of
hardware in the USB slots then I recommend that you try for the advanced
options of repairing the entire installation via Recovery Console.

IF you dont mind can you tell what USB devices are you trying to plug into
the system.

It is a special piece of digital test equipment, so is not a common
commercial item such as a printer that you can just buy in a shop. I am
dealing with the manufacturer in the first instance but this post was
initially intended to see if maybe there was a way of investigating the
installation failure from XP point of view as I suspect the problem is with
my computer, not his test equipment (I have been having a few problems
lately, all started by problems experienced with a recent Windows Automatic
Update that caused me to chase my tail for more than two days thinking I had
a virus or something--I am not happy!)

Success!
I have the USB interface working!--I am not sure why, but after the "Nth"
time of re-installing the driver, and going through the Control Panel "Device
Manager" rather than the Plug and Play Wizard-- it finally worked.
