Chris

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I am running
USB 2.0 with XP SP2. When I copy over music files from
my internal hard disk to my external USB hard disk
(Maxtor 250g) I see blinding speed as it copies over many
files, but once it gets to around 25 megs, it just
hangs. It is still copying but VERY slowly.

I have tried most/all suggested fixes but have run out of
ideas. It is on an HP Pavilion 700 with an AMD 1.8 gig
chip.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Chris

Assuming you have a HP Pavilion 700 (not a 7XX series, but the actual
700), your motherboard is going to be an ASUS A7M266-M. This means you
should be able to get the BIOS updates through ASUS as well as all of
the appropriate drivers. It appears that the southbridge on your
computer (which is what controlls the USB) is going to be the VIA
VT82C686B Chip. Here are the latest drivers for your chipset that you
should install and see if that helps. If not, try the BIOS update.
Some issues may arise if you try to update the BIOS to the BIOS
available from ASUS, so I would suggest sticking with the BIOS provided
by HP (which probably is just modified to remove overclocking options
and other options and to add their logo, etc). That is available here:

If you have a different model number, say 734, just check HP's website ;)
