in windos vista usb drives can be used as extra ram. can this be done in
windows xp? and if so, how is it done?

Afraid not & it's Flash Memory type devices that can be pooled into
the System memory.

Flash Memory (USB Thumb Drives, ...) are similar to regular RAM,
fast access times. Vista can utilize these devices as though they are a
additional stick of RAM. While physically mounted as a drive letter
it works to increase the total RAM available to Vista. If it's more of
a detailed technical explanation you are seeking - I'd suggest you
Google around for "Vista Memory expansion with Flash Memory."
