I have a laptop drive in a caddy, plugged into the USB port. The laptop
drive has Windows NT4 on it, formatted to NT4's NTFS.

I'm trying to access it but it's coming up (correctly) as a 2gb drive. I'm
having no luck getting at the data - it's coming up as unallocated space in
the computer manager. What do I do?

Unallocated space usually means a blank space.
There should be no data on it.
Did you install Win NT4 on it after it was formatted ?

The drive was originally formatted for FAT32. I reformatted it for FAT16,
installed NT4 and then NT4 converted the drive to NTFS.

I've been using the drive sucessfully in my laptop under NT4 but my laptop
went phut a few days ago so I'm trying to access the data. Repairing the
laptop isn't an option I'm willing to undertake.

Hmmm, this is a head scratcher,
It sounds like the hard drive has a problem,
Maybe you need to take the laptop to the shop for testing.
It could be nothing more than a loose connection.

Good Luck,
Jerry

I think the caddy is the problem. Could be tha hard drive but since it's
name and capacity come up correctly, I rather suspect the caddy is the
problem with the laptop.

Either way, it's an old IBM 760EL that's had too much spent on it and needs
too much more spent on it to merit keeping it out of the dustbin.

I'd love to be able to access the drive though.

Very interesting. I decided as there wasn't much on the hard drive, to
format from my XP box. It formatted well on the XP box and while it was
there, I copied a win95 cd across. I'll try loading 95 on the laptop and see
what happens.
