Ms. Daydreams

I bought a new Digital Cam and when I plug in the USB port
I get "new hardware detected - USB Device." It follows
with trying to find the driver, and ends up unsuccessful.

My instruction manual state no drivers needed, it's built
into XP, but that is not happening for me.

I DL'd SP2, and still no luck.

Any ideas or help would sure be appreciated.

XP indeed can recognize some generic devices by device class rather than by hw id.
In your case this doesn't happen. So either the INF database of your XP is broken, either the camera
(or something with USB). Try another camera.

Thanks for the advice... Is there a way to repair the inf
database? I tried it on my PC at work on XT and it worked
fine, so I suspect it's my PC.

Any advice on fixing that?

No "automatic" solution I know of (except of wiping everything and reinstall XP).
Without seeing your machine, poking in INF files or registry can only make the problem worse :(
Especially, avoid emptation to copy all INFs from other machine.
