USB Com Port Assignment

Hello anyone. I am trying to find out if there is a way
to make a USB device use a COM Port such as COM3?

I have an IrDA device that is USB, but the software I
would like to use with it is asking for a COM port. So
can I make this IrDA device act like it is on a COM port?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Also, I was told that I could use a Serial IrDA device and
an adapter from 9pin Serial to USB. Plug this into the
USB port and it will work? How is that possible?
Wouldn't that be the same as the current situation I'm
in? The device does not have a COM port assigned to it,
it's the port it is connected to. Anyway, as usually, any
help is appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried customer support from the software company
and /or the device manufacturer.
